Once you’ve made your statements, leave the room even if your child is upset. You will be checking in on your child. Remind yourself that you have been a loving, supportive parent tonight. Here’s the evidence:
• You have prepared your child.
• You have made your child physically comfortable.
• You have provided reassurance.
• You have tucked your child in.
• You have provided self-comforting tools.
No matter what your child says or does when you begin to disengage, do not be conned into “one more story,” or one more drink or snack, and most importantly, do not linger or become engaged in further conversation.
Your child’s difficulty with the idea of sleeping without you means that he or she really needs your help to disengage. Your giving in at this point would not only be a setback, but you would also be prolonging your child’s upset in the long run.
How to Deal with Crying
This is where it has fallen apart in the past. This is the part you dread. Your child cries when you leave the room after tucking in.
Give Yourself Comfort and Encouragement
If your child cries when you leave the room after tucking in, the first thing you need to do is to comfort yourself. To help yourself leave your child’s room and stay out, dispute the negative thoughts in your head that make you feel guilty.
When you hear yourself think: I’m making my child suffer, comfort yourself by telling yourself:
• My child will suffer more in the long run if I continue to enable this dependency.
• I am helping my child through a normal transition.
• I am a responsible, loving parent.
• My child knows I am here.
